Your Favourite Albums of 2016

34 posts in this topic

As usual in every year... the list of our favourite albums. My list is the following with no order:

Anette Olzon - Vintersjäl / Cold Outside

Delain - Moonbathers

Epica - The Holographic Principle

Semblant - Lunar Manifesto

Already released in Brazil in 2014, but worldwide in 2016. And I met the band around this year.

Tarja Turunen - The Shadow Self

And I'm pretty sure I'll love these two:

Evanescence - The Ultimate Collection

Machinae Supremacy - Into the Night World

Nightwish - Vehicle of Spirit

To be honest, this year has not been great for me in terms of new releases. The only releases I loved this year so far:

Haken "Affinity"

Katatonia "The Fall of Hearts"

Thankfully I discovered lots of new artists, so it hasn't bad year overall for me.

My favourite albums of 2016 are actually not metal albums:

- 'Amnesty (I)' by Crystal Castles

- 'Verloren Verleden' by Anneke van Giersbergen and Arstidir.

In terms of musical discoveries of 2016 I would say Oathbreaker and Batushka.

I haven't listened to that many albums in full from this year :( I've been filling out my Nick Cave and Leaves' Eyes back catalogue instead XD However, the new releases that I have really enjoyed so far, in no particular order:

Epica - The Holographic Principle

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds - Skeleton Tree

Steeleye Span - Dodgy Bastards

I also enjoyed Anette's Cold Outside/ Vintersjal, but haven't counted it above since it's more of a single/ short EP than an album.

I'm hoping to pick up a few new albums after Xmas when I have spare money that I don't need to spend on presents and travel, so may come back to edit this post.

This year for me was solid in therms of releases even though i hear a lot of people that are little unhappy with 2016.

Great albums:

Epica - The Holographic Principle (was there any other choice really   :P )

Gojira - Magma (I know lot of you don't listen to them but this album got Grammy nomination and rightly so)

Avenged Sevenfold - The Stage (Again lot of people have prejudice towards them but this is great album with lyrical theme that is something like combination of latest NW and Epica album. They even got famous scientist Neil deGrasse Tyson on last track. Sounds familiar  :)?)

Metallica - Hardwired to Self-Destruct (Return of the King's.For the Fans of lighter stuff check Halo On Fire It is a masterpiece)

Sabaton - The Last Stand (Not the most musically and structurally complex but it's catchy as hell)

The Witcher 3 soundtrack (this was actually 2015 but this is great album with exceptional combination between Film and slavic folk music.)

Good albums:

Amon Amarth - Jomsviking

Tarja - The Shadow Self / The Brightest Void

Opeth - Sorceress

Fleshgod Apocalypse - King

Lacuna Coil - Delirium

Well, my favorite one is definitely Epica's The Holographic Principle. To be honest, I haven't listened to that many new albums fully this year, and some of the few like Sabaton's new album have been big disappointments.

10.) Descendents - Hypercaffium Spazzinate

One of the world's most influential punk bands is still putting out great and energetic albums!

09.) Serenity - Codex Atlanticus

They still sound like a perfect combination between Kamelot and Sonata Arctica.  This one's a bit less progressive than the last couple and is more of a straight power metal album, but it's great regardless.  "War of Ages", however, remains my favorite.

08.) Lacuna Coil - Delirium

Didn't expect to enjoy this as much as I did.  I would consider this their best album since at least "Karmacode" - so much energy and life to this album.  Doesn't necessarily sound like the old stuff (it's still got an American-style alt metal vibe to it), but it sounds more genuine than...say, "Shallow Life".

07.) Rhapsody of Fire - Into the Legend

I'm actually quite surprised at how much I enjoyed this one.  I thought "Dark Wings of Steel" was terribad and had very low expectations.  Well, Rhapsody of Fire have proven that they certainly had something good left inside 'em, even without Turilli.

06.) BABYMETAL - Metal Resistance
I've tried hating this, but it's just impossible.  It's so terribly catchy and fun.  I just can't help but love every single second of it. :P Pop-metal at its finest.

05.) Delain - Moonbathers

This is a truly magnificent album.  Right from the get go, it's incredible - amazing energy, and some interesting vocals from Charlotte (especially on songs like "Danse Macabre").  Delain have cemented themselves as one of the best symphonic metal bands.

04.) Avantasia - Ghostlights

Tobias Sammet has crafted his best album in many years with this.  Big in scope, soaring melodies, and plenty of amazing guest spots (as usual)!  I know some people have a problem with Avantasia's post-Metal Opera output, but I kind of dig the 80s glam rock meets power metal sound he's been going for as of late. :P

03.) Beseech - My Darkness, Darkness

The goth metal pioneers have returned, to surprisingly little press.  I feel like a lot of people don't even realize they're back together.  Beautiful, melancholic, and atmospheric music that anyone into goth metal or goth rock should give a spin.

02.) Epica - The Holographic Principle

I still see "The Quantum Enigma" as their magnum opus, but this is a strong contender for runner up.  It also happens to be my year-end list's runner up. :P It leans a bit more to their progressive influences than TQE did and it's more of a grower than that album (which I loved almost instantaneously), but it's a strong addition to their discography.  This is what RFTI should have been.

01.) Myrath - Legacy

I just got into this band this year with this album.  I must say, this is an absolutely excellent record in every respect.  Beautiful melodies, fantastic vocals, songwriting that strikes an utterly perfect balance between accessibility and complexity in much the same way an album like Kamelot's "The Black Halo" does.  Hopefully, this band gets the recognition they truly deserve.  Zaher Zorgatti has already landed some interesting guest spots (with Aryeon and Xandria), so they seem to be moving up in the metal world.  More power to them!

EDIT:
I have no idea how I forgot to mention this, but...

Twilight Force - Heroes of Mighty Magic

It's difficult to rank this one.  I think I'll go ahead and tie it with Myrath's "Legacy".  This album is essentially a combination between Rhapsody's bombastic, cinematic power metal and Freedom Call's ultra-cheerful brand of the genre.  Twilight Force's songwriting skills have significantly strengthened since their first foray into the genre "Tales of Ancient Prophecies".  The songs are bigger and beefier, the narration is a thousand times better, and the music is a lot more engaging and immersive - that, and it's just so much fun!  Another band that deserves more popularity than they already have

Epica - The Holographic Principle is the album that stood out as the one I liked most this year.

Delain - Moonbathers is a very close number two.

I see some have a list of 5 and up to 10 albums. I'm not sure if I've even listened to that many new albums this year  :P

Guess I might have explored or rediscovered back catalogues more than new ones!

Xandria and Battle Beast would possibly have been on my list had they released their new albums before the new year.

I'll get back to you on that in a year.  :music:
