Just kidding. I'm back.

And I think that synth-heavy The Mission by Rush is a song Nightwish should cover.
Why?

Because musically, it's very close to Nightwish's writing and the lyrics are, essentially, your standard Holopainen fare about the suffering of poets... only from the opposite point of view to the one Holopainen usually takes (and there lies the humble genius of Peart).

I hear their passionate music
Read the words
That touch my heart
I gaze at their feverish pictures
The secrets that set them apart

When I feel the powerful visions
Their fire has made alive
I wish I had that instinct —
I wish I had that drive

[...]

It’s cold comfort

To the ones without it
To know how they struggled —
How they suffered about it

If their lives were
Exotic and strange
They would likely have
Gladly exchanged them
For something a little more plain
Maybe something a little more sane

We each pay a fabulous price
For our visions of paradise
But a spirit with a vision
Is a dream with a mission.

This is a very beautiful song, though I first listened to it from the tribute Rush cd "Working Man" and not the original.  All the covers in that album are absolutely magnificent.

(Need to thank Dream Theater for making me interested in Rush - already a Pink Floyd fan).

Regarding Nightwish, I believe that even if the band liked it,  it wouldnt appeal to the fans, but I could be wrong.

Why so? It's stylistically very similar, once you add a layer of chuga-chuga guitars and some Floor.
If they got away with covering Gary Moore, Andrew Lloyd Webber and Pink Floyd (not especially popular with power metal fans, are they?) I don't see why this couldn't work in theory ;)

Not that I expect to see Nightwish actually doing covers... ever again.

Holy crap this would be incredible!  Especially with Floor pulling off the "We each pay a fabulous price
For our visions of paradise" line!

Since we're on the subject of prog rock, another one I'd like to hear (in my wildest dreams) is Seasons End by Marillion.
Minor melodies, Enya pads, a soaring guitar solo and gloomy lyrics that are partly about the environment, partly about dealing with irrecoverable loss in general ("you never miss it till it's gone away", as Bruce Dickinson would have it).

Floor and the boys can't do much worse than this rather generic version by Lana Lane and Erik Norlander:

This is tough because I'm not sure there are many songs worth their talents to perform. This is the one I'd like them to do.

Lyrics

I've so much to say, and yet I cannot speak
Come and do my bidding now for I have grown too weak
My weary eyes have seen all that life can give
Come to me, O young one, for you I can forgive

I stood where no man goes, and conquered demon foes
With glory and passion no longer in fashion
The hero breaks his blade

Cast this shadow long that I may hide my face
And in this cloak of darkness the world I will embrace
In all that I endure, of one thing I am sure
Knowledge and reason change like the season
A jester's promenade

Lying at my feet I see the offering you bring
The mark of Cain is on our faces, borne of suffering
O, I long to see you say it's not been wrong

I stand before you now, a riddle in my song
The answer is that sweet refrain
Unheard it always will remain
Beyond our reach, beyond our gain

Trapped in life's parade, a king without a crown
In this joy of madness, my smile might seem a frown
With talons wrought of steel, I tore the heart of doom
And in one gleaming moment I saw beyond the tomb

I stood where no man goes, above the din I rose
Life is amusing though we are losing
Drowned in tears of awe.

Before Floor...there was another..

Whilst doing the afterwork commute today this song (1975) came on and I got to thinking..wow if Nightwish were to do a cover of this...:)

The cover of the Pink Floyd song is tremendous and Im not a big Floyd fan.

Take a listen to what Therion did with an ABBA classic and you will get an idea of what symphonic metal and a pop song from 1978 can become...

hoping....dreaming...

Alone is probably the best you'll get.

But I'd pay good money for them to properly record the second verion.

Wow, I didn't know Nightwish played Alone live.

But I like the Christmas Metal Symphony version more.

Me too. I wish After Forever had recorded this version instead of the one they did. It's still nice, but not as good imo.
